[Carpet] improve Carpet commit messages from git ?

Certainly!  In fact, the messages are generated by a script.  I append  
the current version below.  This script lives in the "hooks"  
subdirectory of the .git repository on the git server.  We should  
probably keep a copy somewhere in the Carpet repository for  
documentation.
