But the inclusion of hdf5toascii_slicer as a utility program is also 
gone now. I think we need to keep a make.configuration.defn file with 
the contents

   # add the Carpet HDF5-to-ASCII converter/slicer
   ALL_UTILS += hdf5toascii_slicer
