Carpet status report
Performance monitoring. Andre Werthmann and Yaakoub Y El Khamra have
studied mpiP (MPICH) and XMPI (LAM) to profile Carpet's communication.
These two tools seem to complement each other; while mpiP gives a
detailed summary of the communication pattern including source
locations, XMPI allows the times of each sent and received message to
be viewed. Some minor improvements to Carpet have been made. It
remains to use these tools to analyse Carpet's communication patterns
in detail.
HDF5 I/O. Thomas Radke has implemented recombining the output
components as they are written to file. This should reduce the number
of components that visualisation tools have to deal with. We also
reduced the number of attributes that are attached to each dataset,
which should speed up handling large data files.
Checkpointing. Thomas Radke has found the cause that prevented
checkpointing at arbitrary times from working. Checkpointing and
restart should now be safe at any iteration.
darcs. Thomas Radke has written a perl script that automatically sends
emails about new patches as they are pushed to the main Carpet
repository.
Teaching. I will give a "Carpet design walkthrough" this week. See
http://www.carpetcode.org/design-walkthrough.html for more information.
This walkthrough will take place in Potsdam, and we hope to broadcast
it via the access grid and via VIC and RAT to interested people abroad.
